One of the unique qualities of Dermatology Specialists of Boulder is that all cosmetic injections are performed by Dr Allen.
Botox Cosmetic® and Dysport® are commonly used to reduce or eliminate the appearance of facial lines and wrinkles. The FDA has approved the use of these products for the area between the eyes, commonly called frown lines. These products are most frequently injected under the skin into areas surrounding the eyes, lips, chin, forehead neck and mouth to smooth crow’s feet, frown and worry lines, as well as lines on the neck. Dr Allen has extensive experience in the use of Botox® and Dysport® on the face and the body, including in the treatment of excessive sweating of the hands feet and armpits. Made from a purified protein, injections relax muscles that cause wrinkles and give the face a rejuvenated look. Botox® and Dysport® have been used throughout the world safely for cosmetic purposes for many years. All injections are performed by Dr Allen.
Restylane® and Perlane® and Juvederm® are hyaluronic gels FDA approved to smooth facial wrinkles and folds. These fillers are clear gels composed of hyaluronic acid, a natural substance that is found throughout your body. The most common use include revolumizing the face and shaping facial contours and lips. Areas for treatment might include the lips, the nasolabial folds (from the side of the nose to the corners of your mouth,) under the eyes, and to lift the cheeks. With their unique ability to bind with water, these fillers can provide lasting improvement and a smooth, natural appearance. Scientific studies show that Restylane may last up to 18 months in 95% of patients. Other areas of usage include the hands to restore volume as well as many other areas on the face, including earlobes and acne scars. All injections are performed by Dr Allen.
Radiesse™ is a synthetic injectable filler that reduces wrinkles, creases and scars by augmenting the body’s natural collagen supply. Composed of microspheres of calcium and phosphate in a biocompatible gel, Radiesse™ is made from the same minerals found in our bones, so it carries almost no risk of allergic reaction. Radiesse™ can be used on many areas of the body, but the most effective area treated are the nasolabial folds, cheeks, laugh lines and around the mouth. All injections are performed by Dr Allen.
Sclerotherapy has long been the standard treatment for varicose and spider veins. The procedure involves injecting a solution through a tiny needle into the vein, which then collapses and is absorbed by the body. Several years ago, the only FDA approved product that could be used was hypertonic saline. Unfortunately, saline had minimal results and a high level of discomfort during treatments. Fortunately, in 2006 Sotradecol© was FDA approved for the treatment of varicose veins safely and effectively, with minimal discomfort. Treatments involves injections during one or more sessions, depending on the type, number and severity of the veins being treated. On average, one to five sessions, spaced six weeks apart are required. After each session, patients may have to wear bandages or support hose for a few days or weeks and are encouraged to walk or exercise to speed recovery. Bruising and swelling (if present) should fade within a week or two. By the end of the treatment program, the veins should be minimally or no longer visible on the skin surface. All injections are performed by Dr Allen.
As an alternative to injections, we also offer the most advanced and effective laser treatments for varicose and spider veins. These laser treatments are highly effective. Each session whether it is an injection or a laser will take approximately 15 to 60 minutes to complete, depending on the extent of the vein problem.
We currently use the Sciton Profile system for Treatments Such As:
• Photorejuvenation to reduce pigmented lesions and vascular lesions
• SkinTyte treatments for skin laxity of face and body
• Profractional laser treatment for tightening and resurfacing the skin
• Microlaser peel
And we offer combinations of the above procedures to optimize your results.
Broadband Light - BBL™ (The most advanced IPL System available)
This light-based procedure reduces pigmented lesions and unwanted blood vessels in the skin through a process known as selective photothermolysis. Essentially, dark areas in the skin and blood vessels absorb light more intensely than uninvolved areas. The dark or vascular areas then are selectively removed. Through this form of natural selection, the dark regions of the skin and unwanted blood vessels are destroyed while the light ones are relatively unaffected. When specially selected filters are utilized, the BBL allows for highly effective treatment of:
• Freckles / Sun Spots (aka solar lentigines)
• Rosacea
• Age spots
• Brown spots, birth marks
• Hyperpigmentation / Melasma
• Poikiloderma (sun damaged neck skin)
In addition, BBL treatments can also reduce the incidence of spider or varicose veins. It can be used to treat:
• Spider veins
• Broken capillaries
• Facial veins
• Telanglectasia
Finally, BBL can also have a significant impact on scars, striae, laser hair reduction and skin tightening.
In general, patients do not feel any or minimal discomfort from, nor need any downtime after BBL treatments. They can return to work immediately after the treatment.
SkinTyte™ treatments
SkinTyte is a noninvasive treatment for tightening your skin without resurfacing, a revolutionary combination of BBL deep heating of subsurface collagen coupled with surface cooling to stimulate new collagen growth without causing damage to surrounding tissues. Because collagen is partly responsible for skin elasticity, the immediate contraction of the collagen leads to tighter skin. The heating process also stimulates the body's natural healing process, encouraging it to make more collagen, which also leads to a tightening of the skin. For most patients, the improvement in skin tone is significant, but be certain that this will not be as profound as a surgical facelift. However, it involves no downtime and no surgery. A series of 3-5 treatments are usually recommended and a package discount is available.
Profractional™ laser treatment (fractionated resurfacing)
In this treatment, a deep ablative laser is applied not to the entire surface of the skin, as in traditional laser skin resurfacing, but only on very select tiny columns covering as little as 1.5 % to 60% of the skin surface area. This removes dead tissue and stimulates the production of collagen around the treated area. This treatment gives all the benefits of a laser skin resurfacing without the same risks of infection or lengthy downtime that served as a deterrent for many laser patients. This is a procedure with less downtime, less discomfort, and less chance of complications than many other fractionated lasers on the market. The Profractional XC™ is the latest advancement in fractionated laser resurfacing and is available at
Dermatology Specialists of Boulder. Dr Allen is a national speaker on the latest advances in fractionated resurfacing.
Microlaser Peel
This treatment can achieve similar results as traditional laser skin resurfacing, but because of the combination of advanced elements in the Sciton Profile™ system, it can be done without the lengthy recovery period. In fact, the recovery period for a Sciton Profile™ Microlaser peel is approximately half that of the more traditional resurfacing.
