FELLOWSHIP
Overview: The program Director is Dr Shawn Allen, a Mohs college-trained and board-certified Dermatologist. He did his Dermatology training and fellowship training in Mohs Surgery and Cosmetic Surgery at Washington University under nationally renowned physicians Roberta Sengelmann MD and Jeff Petersen MD. Dr Allen lectures nationally and internationally and has the distinction of being a physician trainer for filler and botulinum toxins. He is also an international editor for the Journal of Drugs in Dermatology.
The fellow will see many different approaches to both Mohs surgery and reconstruction. The surgical curriculum will include hands on experience using the Mohs technique, reconstructive methods including second intention healing, primary closure, grafts, and flaps. The vast majority of the surgery sites are closed by Dr Allen in the office. However, on occasion we may also collaborate with our colleagues in plastic surgery, facial plastic surgery and oculoplastic surgery. When this occurs, the fellow will usually have the opportunity to work with these other subspecialists. Dr Allen has performed well over 3000 Mohs cases and performs hundreds of Mohs procedures a year .
The laser and cosmetic experience also occurs directly with Dr. Allen. Dr. Allen has over 10 years of experience in the use of lasers in cutaneous medicine and has extensive experience using lasers for tattoo removal, hair, pigment and vessel removal, ablative and non-ablative resurfacing, and fractional lasers, as well as tissue tightening devices. The fellow will be trained with the latest technology including erbium YAG ablation, fractionated erbium YAG ablation, broad-band light (BBL/IPL)for vascular and pigmented lesions, laser hair removal with IPL/BBL and Nd YAG as well as varicose treatments with Nd YAG. Leg vein treatments with sclerotherapy and participating in liposuction cases will be available. Research opportunities exist and we will do our best to support any interests the fellow may wish to pursue.
The program is structured so that 2 to 3 days a week are typically spent doing Mohs surgery. One day a week the fellow has their own dermatology, lumps, bumps and tumor excision clinic. The other two days are spent in cosmetic surgery, lasers and injectables. The fellow will learn how to open and run a successful medical practice.
Dr Allen is on faculty at the University of Colorado and there are opportunities to assist with resident teaching through talks and training sessions. The fellowship also sponsors the fellow to attend medical meetings throughout the year.
In summary, this is a combined surgery and laser fellowship with a well-organized curriculum in a warm friendly office in one of the most beautiful places to live. Our goal is to train fellows who will continue to contribute to the field long after completing their training.

International Fellowship Program - This is a separate specialty-training program designed for dermatologists from outside of the US to develop skills in Cosmetic Dermatology. Because of licensing issues, this is an observation only experience. The fellow will be supervised by Dr. Allen directly. Proof of dermatology residency or its completion is required and you must be Board Certified in your home country. The fellowship is a 3-week fellowship devoted exclusively to Mohs surgery and cosmetic dermatology. Longer periods of training can be organized when necessary. All fellows will receive a certificate from Dermatology Specialists of Boulder recognizing their completion of a 3 week intensive fellowship in Mohs surgery and cosmetic dermatology.
